Max Armstrong

Max is a Manager based in BDO’s Birmingham office, managing engagements across the public sector and the Non-Governmental Departmental Bodies (NGDB) sector.

Max manages fully outsourced and co-sourced internal audit engagements across a range of public sector organisations, with extensive experience of working with organisations across the sport sector and other NGDBs. He has led on governance and finance reviews through the UK Sport and previously Sport England contracts, liaising directly with national governing bodies to provide value to their organisations, and currently manages UK Sport’s Finance Assurance Programme.

Max has worked directly and led governance and finance reviews at over 50 NGBs and funded partners, ranging from some of the largest in the country to small regional organisations. 

Through his delivery of governance and finance reviews since 2018, Max has attended over 20 NGBs Board and Audit Committee meetings and met with over 50 Board members or C-Suite Executives. Additionally, Max has hosted webinars with Finance Directors across the sector to share best practice in sports financial governance. 

Beyond the sports sector, Max manages other lottery distributors, including the National Lottery Community Fund, and has worked on projects with the Department for Media, Culture and Sport. 
He has also delivered reviews with local authorities, focused on how they manage their leisure assets to achieve national objectives set by the Government and Sport England for increasing physical activity.
